Senate approves $2B raise for NIH in FY19

The Senate on Thursday approved a $2 billion increase for NIH to $39.1 billion for FY19 despite the Trump administration's earlier recommendation of steep cuts.

A statement from Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), chair of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on labor, health and human services, education and related agencies, said the bill includes $3.7 billion in funding to fight the opioid epidemic, which represents a $147 million increase; and $3.4 billion for mental health research, treatment and prevention, good for a $195 million increase.
