Primate studies suggest combining CD4 mimetics with HIV gp120-based vaccines could help prevent HIV. In macaques challenged with simian human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) immunized with HIV gp120 variants, a CD4 mimetic prevented infection in 8 of 8 animals, whereas the CD4 mimetic or gp120 variants alone protected 1 of 6 and 1 of 8 animals, respectively. Next steps include developing methods for sustained delivery of the CD4 mimetic.
