Researchers published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences evidence that fluoxetine mediates serotonin reuptake by regulating phosphorylation of DARPP-32, an inhibitor of protein phosphatase-1, which also plays a role in the AMPA receptor signaling pathway. Mice treated with fluoxetine showed significant increases in DARPP-32 phosphorylation (p<0.05). In vitro, serotonin treatment increased phosphorylation of DARPP-32, and serotonin induced phosphorylation of the GluR1 subunit of the AMPA receptor that was dependent on DARPP-32 activity. ...
