rBPI-23 Bactericidal/permeability increasing protein data

XOMA demonstrated enhanced survival with rBPI-23 in a mouse model of sepsis, and additive action of rBPI-23 with the antibiotic gentamicin.

In vitro assays showed that adding gentamicin enhanced rBPI-23's killing ability and widened the spectrum of bacterial strains killed. The model of sepsis provided by mice infected with the J5 rough strain of E. coli showed 11 of 15 mice given rBPI-23 survived at 72 hours, compared to six of 15 mice injected with saline (p < 0.02). This protective effect was not seen in infections with the smooth strain of the bacterium. ...
