University researchers published the successful transfer into irradiated mice of Mesenchymal precursor cells from transgenic mice expressing a human mini-gene for collagen I. The recipient animals then showed incorporation into their tissues and expression of the gene.

While many recent gene therapy efforts have used hematopoietic stem cells isolated from marrow, marrow also contains mesenchymal precursor cells, which produce fibrious tissue, bone or cartilage. As detailed in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, donor cells at one to five months after injection accounted for 1.5-12 percent of the cells in bone, cartilage, marrow, spleen, and lung. ...
