The group of industry partners and research institutions created the non-profit Indiana Biosciences Research Institute to discover and develop health technologies, with an initial focus on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and nutrition. The state of Indiana has committed $25 million to the institute for start-up costs, and an additional $25 million in start-up costs is being sought from industry and philanthropic sources. The remaining $310 million capital funding will be sought from corporate and philanthropic sources, and ongoing operating costs will be funded through Institute endowment proceeds, industry-sponsored research and federally funded research. Teams of academic and industry scientists, comprising experts across a spectrum of competencies, including bioengineering, bioinformatics, nanotechnology and agriculture, will share resources and research laboratories at the institute, and will work onsite at industry and research university labs. ...
