Illumina introduces $1,000 human genome system

Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ:ILMN) introduced the HiSeq X Ten Sequencing System, which the company said is the first system that can sequence whole human genomes for less than $1,000 each. At the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference on Tuesday, Illumina President and CEO Jay Flatley said he expects customers can sequence about 18,030 genomes per system per year.

HiSeq X Ten will be sold as a set of 10 sequencers for $10 million, with additional sequencers available for $1 million each. The first systems will ship in March to customers that include South Korean genomic services company Macrogen Inc. (KOSDAQ:038290), the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (Cambridge, Mass.) and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Sydney, Australia). ...
