p53 and STICs identified as biomarkers for ovarian cancer

A paper published in Nature Communications suggests that precursor lesions in fallopian tubes, including a single-cell epithelial layer with mutations in tumor protein p53 (TP53; p53) and serous tube intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), could be useful biomarkers for high-grade serous ovarian cancer.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School and colleagues performed whole-exome sequencing of tumor tissue and matched normal tissue specimens from five patients diagnosed with sporadic high-grade serous ovarian cancer and found similar somatic mutations and structural changes in all tumor tissues in each patient, including identical sequence changes in the p53 gene in STIC lesions and other tumor tissues within individual patients...
