Cell culture and mouse studies suggest inhibiting Rho kinase could help to treat AD. In primary rat cortical neurons stimulated with DKK1 to produce β amyloid, the Rho kinase inhibitor Eril fasudil increased dendritic spine numbers and decreased β amyloid levels compared with no treatment. In a mouse model of AD, Eril decreased levels of β amyloid and plaque area in the cortex and hippocampus compared with vehicle.
