The former diabetes drug phenformin for T cell ALL

INDICATION: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)

Cell culture and mouse studies suggest phenformin could help treat PTEN-deficient T cell ALL. In three mouse PTEN-deficient T cell ALL cell lines, phenformin inhibited growth with IC50 values of 3-7 μM. In a mouse model of PTEN-deficient T cell ALL, phenformin increased tumor-free survival compared with no treatment. Next steps could include testing phenformin in other models of T cell ALL and identifying the compound's target in the disease...
