Health Secretary Javid among ministers quitting U.K. government

Amid a rash of departures from the U.K. government, Sajid Javid resigned Tuesday as secretary of state for health and social care, a post in which he’s helped lead the nation’s COVID response for the past year. “I can no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this Government, I am instinctively a team player but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government,” he wrote in his resignation letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Downing Street Chief of Staff Steve Barclay, will replace Javid as health secretary.

Javid’s resignation coincided with that of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, whose letter to Johnson echoed that of Javid’s. “The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously,” Sunak wrote.
