The U.K. government appointed Angela McLean its chief scientific adviser, effective April 1, the first time a woman has held the role. McLean, a professor of mathematical biology at Oxford University, has been the chief scientific adviser for the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence since September 2019. McLean will provide independent scientific advice to the U.K. prime minister and members of cabinet, advise the government on aspects of policy on science and technology, and ensure and improve the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government.
