ARPA-H focus areas include proactive health, resilient systems

In bid to diminish disappointment, the agency will have three ‘hubs’

On the first anniversary of its creation, the ARPA-H Wednesday announced that it had hired more than 100 staff members, identified four priority funding areas, and decided to spread its offices over three geographic locations. It also announced a competition designed to uncover innovative ideas that could revolutionize health outcomes.

Congress has appropriated $1 billion for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health and the Biden administration is asking it for $2.5 billion. Its mission is to accelerate the pace at which science is turned into medicine, and to do so through hands-on, goal-oriented funding. ARPA-H was created to address the frustration among many patient advocates and biomedical innovators with NIH’s pace and urgency, and in response to the sense that it fails to back high-risk, high-reward projects that could result in transformational improvements in health. ...
