How SVB helped VCs manage money flow from LPs to portfolio companies 

Bank acted as administrator plus loan provider to help high-risk companies receive ‘small’ amounts of money

One of the features that will be hardest to replace in SVB, as VCs shop around for a new bank to handle their transactions, is the facile administrator role it played, even for small outfits.

Silicon Valley Bank wasn’t the only bank to provide agile services for VCs that enable funds to be tapped from LPs and sent to portfolio companies, but it was specifically geared to work with start-ups and other companies dealing with amounts even in the low millions of dollars. It was also tailored to provide VCs with loan arrangements that not only helped with timing and logistics of LP capital calls, but helped them optimize their internal rates of return — the all-important IRR by which LPs measure the performance of their investments...
