Várhelyi to lead health at EU

European Union President Ursula von der Leyen named Olivér Várhelyi commissioner for health and animal welfare, with the explicit goal of completing the European Health Union — an initiative to protect the health of the union’s citizens, equip member states to better manage pandemics, and improve the resilience of Europe’s health systems. A native of Hungary, Várhelyi began his career in 1996 at Hungary’s ministry for industry and trade, and was until most recently the EU’s commissioner of neighborhood and enlargement. Von der Leyen also tasked Várhelyi with addressing drug shortages and regulatory reform, among other responsibilities.
