GnRH replacement therapy could help treat Down syndrome. Using a genetic mouse model of Down syndrome that shows deficits in sexual development and post-pubertal onset of olfactory and cognitive deficits analogous to those seen in patients, hypothalamic projections of neurons expressing GnRH were found to be equally abundant in wild-type and Down syndrome mice at birth, but after puberty the Down syndrome mice had loss of GnRH neurons in the preoptic area, and a near complete loss of GnRH projections from the hypothalamus. ...
