Gut bacterial metabolite targeting NOX2 for abdominal aortic aneurysm

The bacterial microbe Roseburia intestinalis and its metabolite butyrate could help treat abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by inhibiting neutrophil infiltration and NOX2-dependent neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation.

Metagenomic analysis of stool samples showed R. intestinalis abundance was decreased in AAA patients compared with healthy individuals, and was positively correlated with expression of enzymes involved in butyric acid production; metabolomic analysis also showed butyric acid levels were decreased in the intestines and plasma of AAA patients. ...
