Inhibiting epithelial SIRT6 for asthma

Inhibiting the histone deacetylase SIRT6 could help treat asthma by preventing recruitment of the transcription factor RORγT to the IL-17A promoter, thus inhibiting IL-17A transcription, and subsequent airway inflammation and remodeling.

SIRT6 mRNA and protein expression was higher in peripheral blood and bronchial biopsies from mild to moderate asthmatic patients than in blood and biopsies from healthy individuals, and were even higher in severe asthmatic patients.
