Innovations Distillery FAQ

A BioCentury Quick Guide

Below are answers to the common questions users may have using the new Innovations Distillery dashboard.

Last update: October 2024

Q: Can Publication-only subscribers still access the Innovation Distillery?

A: The Innovation Distillery, our Data & Analytics product, is now exclusive to BCIQ subscribers. However, if you're a Publication-only subscriber, you'll still have access to the Distillery Articles (also known as Analyst Briefings) and the link to the original research articles. The original Distillery Dashboard board will also remain available to publication-only subscribers through November 15th, 2024.

Q: When will Publication subscribers lose access to the old Distillery Dashboard?

A: Publication subscribers will continue to have access to the old Distillery Dashboard until November 15th, 2024. We'll also be sharing this information directly on the old Distillery Dashboard page.

Q: How do you decide which biomedical articles are included in the Distillery?

A: BioCentury’s Biotechnology Analysts carefully select biomedical research articles that show high potential to impact medicine, drug development, or manufacturing in the next 3-5 years. Although the primary research article can present a multitude of predictors, our analysts consider research with these characteristics to be most promising.

  • Disease-modifying effects in one or more experimental systems, preferably with multiple lines of evidence (e.g. genetic and pharmacological perturbations)
  • Data from primary patient samples that supports the article’s underlying hypothesis
  • A new Target that has not yet been included in the BCIQ database, indicating a lack of prior industry activity
  • A patent issued or patent application filed for the underlying technology, suggesting the originators are actively pursuing a path to commercialization
  • Other prioritization factors for article curation include:
    1. Diseases prioritized by industry
    2. Emerging therapeutic modalities
    3. Biological pathways whose translational relevance has been emerging in multiple recent papers
    4. Compounds that address difficult-to-drug Targets
    5. Compounds that have an advantage over existing Products against established Targets

Q: What Journals are searched and included in the article curation for the Innovations Distillery?

Our goal is to ensure that the Innovation Distillery highlights the most promising innovations for future medical advancements.

Q: Will Science Spotlight articles be available in the Innovation Distillery?

A: Not just yet, but they’re coming soon! We plan to bring Science Spotlight articles to the Innovation Distillery in early 2025.

Q: When is the next update to the Innovation Distillery?

Q: What type of patent information is available in the Innovation Distillery?

A: For the work presented in each primary article, the Innovation Distillery indicates whether there has been a patent issued or patent application filed, or whether the work is unpatented, or the patent information is undisclosed or unavailable. This information is derived from disclosures made in the primary research articles, and also from correspondence between BioCentury’s Biotechnology Analysts and the primary articles’ corresponding authors.
